Melbourne has become one of the fastest growing regions in Australia, placing an increased strain on public and private transportation services. Construction surrounding the extension of the South Morang line to Mernda is now underway, creating approximately 3,000 new roles and providing economic growth in the region with regards to local businesses. The project will also help provide skills to young workers, such as trainees and apprentices who are interested in a career in construction and engineering.

Overall design

Costing around $600 million, the 8km project is being funded by the Victorian State Government in order to tackle increased congestion levels and will reduce commute times significantly for commuters. Constructed by John Holland, the new track will carry over 8,000 passengers per day, the project will also incorporate the removal of approximately 50 level crossings by the Level Crossing Removal Authority, replaced by grade separations. The project will incorporate pedestrian pathways, cycling routes and extensive car parking. Over 80 percent of the track will be constructed at ground level, whilst the rest will be part of an elevated structure. The new track will link with the existing South Morang Line and incorporate three new stations, situated at Mernda, Marymede and Hawkstowe. Mernda station will be embedded within the Town Centre, providing suitable access to entertainment and cultural facilities, restaurants and transportation links.
