German-government owned rail company Deutsche Bahn has awarded a new €55mn high speed rail contract to global construction player Vinci.

The contract will require Vinci to build a new section of railway from Stuttgart Airport and the city of Wendlingen, stretching approximately 15km, that will make up part of the new high-speed line between Stuttgart and Ulm in southern Germany.

“This railway and urban development project is designed to relieve traffic congestion and upgrade the railway junction in Stuttgart, by turning the city’s existing infrastructure into an underground pass-through train station,” Vinci said.

The work will include the construction of 5.4km of new earthworks and drainage systems, 7.5km of siding, and 8,500 square meters of noise barriers.

The section of the project will take roughly two years to complete, with around 100 people set to be employed for the duration of this, reinforcing Germany as Vinci’s second biggest market outside of France.

Further, the project is expected to become part of the Magistrale for Europe plan that looks to build an extensive high speed rail link from Paris to Budapest.
