A new cycleway within New Zealand is set to commence, linking Omokoroa and Tauranga to the existing cycleway network, providing increased freedom and independence for families within the area.

Part of New Zealand’s Urban Cycleways Programme, the 19km cycleway has been welcomed by the local community. The project will provide citizens with increased access to community areas, such as schools, parks and residential areas and encourage the use of sustainable transport, providing safe travel away from busy roads and encourage children to cycle to school.

Transport Simon Bridges said, “This new cycleway will play a vital part in a planned cycle network that will offer more cycling and walking connections between Tauranga and the Western Bay of Plenty, providing people with a range of transport options.”

Bridges continued: “Over the next three years about $15 million will be invested into cycling projects in the Western Bay through our Urban Cycleways Programme to help establish cycling as an integral part of the area’s transport network.”

"It will be great not just for cycling but walking, with dogs - on a leash of course - and even mobility scooters in some parts”, claimed Western Bay of Plenty Mayor Ross Paterson.

Work is set to commence in September, with the aim to complete in 2018.
