Construction work has begun on the extension project of the Los Angeles subway.

The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority is extending the train system’s Purple Line.

The 2.6-mile long extension is part of three sections to the project which aims to connect Westside and Downtown LA, whilst easing congestion.

Section 1 is 30% complete and is expected to be operational by 2023, running between Wilshire/Western and Wilshire/La Cienega.

Section 2 of the project will be constructed in three parts, spanning across 8.9 miles and seven subway stations.

The second phase is anticipated to be complete by 2025, adding to the Purple Line from Wilshire/Western and extending to the Veterans Affairs West Los Angeles Medical Center.

The final section of the construction work, between Century City and VA Medical Center, will begin next year, to be ready by 2026.

The authority has committed $2.53bn into Section 2, and $6.3bn into the entire extention.

The project will predominantly be funded by Measure R’s county sales tax proceeds and Measure M’s local funding.

In January, Tutor Perini and O&G won a contract as a joint venture worth $1.37bn to develop Section 2.

The Section 2 project is anticipated to create 20,500 job opportunities within the next 10 years, the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation claims.
