A contract with Empire State Development Corporation (ESD) developers Related Companies and Vornado Realty Trust will enable Skanska to transform New York’s James A. Farley Post Office Building in New York City

The $1.26 billion revamp incorporates a new 24,000-square-meter Moynihan Train Hall, a conversion of an original, century-old US. Postal Service mail sorting room and incorporate 120,000m2 of transit, commercial and retail space.

Featuring a new glass canopy roof and skylight, in addition to providing access to all platforms serving the Long Island Rail Road and Amtrak, the Train Hall will improve access for Pennsylvania Station’s 650,000 commuters which utilise the service daily, with a new 23,700 metre square concourse.

Originally revealed by New York state governor Andrew Cuomo, the development also incorporates approximately 120,000 gross square meters of transit, retail and commercial office space, in addition to structural, architectural, mechanical, electrical and plumbing improvements.

Set to complete in 2022, the project will house nine platforms and over 15 tracks, with the existing concourse along West 33rd Street set to be redesigned in the project.

“Skanska is grateful for the opportunity to deepen our history of partnership with the State of New York to modernize and expand our transportation infrastructure. We are also proud to partner with Related and Vornado, who have brought together their world-class development teams with our heavy civil and construction management expertise to meet this unique challenge”, said Anders Danielsson, President and CEO, Skanska USA
