Bentley to build 10,000-solar panel car port at UK headquarters

Leading automaker Bentley has announced that it is set to build the UK’s largest solar powered car port at its UK headquarters in Crewe.

The car port, set to provide shelter for up to 1,378 parked vehicles, will feature 10,000 solar panels that combined will generate a total 2.7MW of energy – a capacity that is expected to cover as much as 24% of Bentley’s electrical energy requirements, reducing its carbon dioxide emissions by 3,300 tonnes annually.

“This solar installation is another example of how we can make our factory more sustainable by using technological innovation,” said Peter Bosch, Bentley’s Member of the Board for Manufacturing.

“This helps us produce extraordinary cars with responsibly-sourced materials in an efficient manner, while continually striving to reduce the company’s environmental impact.”

Covering an area of 16,400 square metres, the project will take six months to complete, with FlexiSolar having been appointed to install and operate the solar panels on behalf of Bentley.

The car port will be Bentley’s second major solar construction project, having completed a 20,815 solar panel rooftop installation in 2013.
