Jeddah, on the Red Sea coast of Saudi Arabia, is to build three entire new cities in a bid to balance the physical landscape and demographics of the wider country.

The cities will be based around Gulf Salman, Al-Aslaa Valley, and Asfan city, Jeddah Municipality spokesman Mohammad Al-Bugamy confirmed.

One will be residential while the others will be recreational and industrial, with the Jeddah Development and Urban Regeneration Company helping the municipality with the design and development of the new projects.

Gulf Salman’s city will attempt to solve the residential question, and will include educational, religious, health, sports, recreational, and general services facilities covering an area of three million square meters. The project includes 1,250 residential buildings, offering 25,000 residential units.

Only 11 percent of the area is allocated for commercial buildings, 52 percent for residential land, and 37 percent roads, open land, recreational facilities, parks, and parking lots.

The industrial Asfan city project covers five million square meters, with the first phase of the project almost complete. The area will have 2,095 industrial facilities, 183 warehouses for various materials such as wood and metal, 22 factories, alongside 385 stores and showrooms.
