The relationship between Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) and US Green Building Council (USGBC) is to be further strengthened as India seeks to increase the uptake of green building in the country.

The ten-year licence agreement between the two councils signed in 2004 ends in June, to be replaced by a new decade-long agreement focused on the areas of advocacy, knowledge exchange and market transformation.

Beginning July 1, 2014, Indian Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) projects will be registered and certified directly by the Green Building Certification Institute (GBCI), which has been appointed by USGBC.

IGBC recently achieved the milestone of 2 billion sq ft of built-up green building projects registered with the Council, which aims to push on to a figure of 10 billion sq ft by 2022: the year India will celebrate 75 years of independence.

LEED projects in India which are already registered with IGBC will be certified by IGBC until the end of 2018.

IGBC will continue to certify projects in the categories of Homes, Townships, Factory buildings, SEZ and Landscaping.
