DB Network, the German infrastructure company, has awarded its first major contract for the construction of the second Munich S-Bahn tunnel.
The contract has been awarded to a consortium of Züblin, Wayss & Freytag, Max Bögl, and Bauer Spezialtiefbau, International Railway Journal reported.
The €189mn (US$215.4mn) contract for the development of the Overground West will feature work on additional tracks and pointwork, and two flyovers.
The consortium will also be responsible for constructing a double-track steel arch bridge on the surface section which runs between Laim and Donnersberger Brücke.
Planning for the project will commence in November, and construction is expected to begin in 2019.
The second tunnel will be used to add additional capacity to the city centre tunnel that carries 60 trains per hour.
Three new underground stations will be created through the project – Munich Main Station, Marienhof, and Munich East.
The second tunnel is expected to be open and operational in December 2026.
