One of the most important parts of a construction project is budget management – we all know this, but every year major builds balloon way over budget and end up costing two, three, even four times more than estimated.

The new train station at the World Trade Center made headlines recently after reports revealed it is running at least $2 billion over budget. The total cost is approaching $4 billion, which is nearly double the project’s estimate when unveiled a decade ago. But as outrageous and stress inducing as this may sound, its actually commonplace across the global industry. The 12 projects listed below, collectively went more than $50 billion over budget.
