Research on Passing Effects of Ships on Port Design

Since many ports were originally built, the size, speed and power of ships entering them has increased dramatically. The impact has meant a larger 'wash' created when ships move in and out of ports resulting in safety issues, environmental damage, and financial loss. So as setting new international guidelines for the design and construction of future ports is becoming increasingly important, Bechtel is leading an international joint-industry research initiative called Research on the Passing Effects on Ships (ROPES) which involves small-scale testing via mathematical modeling and real-time scale modeling. First results of the research are expected in 2013.
